Halide app update brings the iPhone 13 Pro’s macro photography feature to the iPhone 8 and newer

It makes typing and editing text easier than before.

9TO5Mac ~ Halide announced a major update for its award-winning camera app. iPhone users can update to version 2.5, which enables iPhone 13’s Macro Mode to the iPhone 8 or newer.

In a blog post, Halide’s Ben Sandofsky explains how great it is to have a macro camera, showing a ton of examples. Sandofsky also explains that this feature was available for a while thanks to third-party lenses, but those implementations aren’t as powerful as the iPhone 13 solution.

Now, Halide is bringing a Macro Mode feature to all users of the iPhone 8 or newer, and users can choose whether or not to activate the mode.

Macro Mode is easily accessed. As opposed to the built-in camera, we decided to really make Macro photography a deliberate ‘mode.’ While the ultra-wide camera in Halide will still automatically focus on very close subjects if you desire, we believe that taking macro photos is best done in a mode that supports a particular style of photography.

To access Macro Mode, users have to tap the “AF” button, then the flower icon, which in Halide’s case is a tulip “because our designer is Dutch.”

Here’s how it works:

Entering Macro Mode, smart things start to happen in Halide. To begin, Halide examines your available cameras and switches to whichever one has the shortest minimum focus distance. Then it locks focus at that nearest point. You can tap anywhere on screen to adjust focus; unlike our standard camera mode, we configure the focus system to only search for objects very close to you.

Halide also lets you adjust the focus by hand. Not only that, the app created a feature called Neural Macro, which upscales images in a way that produces “much sharper, smoother results than what you typically get in an editor.”

How to clean your Apple Polishing Cloth without ruining it

If you have to spend A$29 on Apple’s fancy Polishing Cloth, which is now available in Australia. You should know how to properly look after it so that it doesn’t get ruined.

You can’t just throw it in the washing machine with your mucky laundry when it starts to get dirty.

Fortunately, Apple has now provided official instructions on keeping the Polishing Cloth clean. Here’s what you need to know.

Cult of Mac helps us ~ Safely cleaning your Apple Polishing Cloth

Most Apple displays don’t need a special cleaning cloth. Regular (and significantly more affordable) microfiber and other soft cloths — like the excellent options available from CultCloth — are perfectly fine for glass screens.

However, Apple says you shouldn’t use any old cloth on Pro Display XDR with nano-texture glass. So, if you’ve picked up Apple’s own Polishing Cloth for keeping your screens smudge-free, here’s how to clean it when it gets dirty:

      • Hand wash the polishing cloth with dish soap and water.
      • Rinse thoroughly.
      • Allow the polishing cloth to air dry for at least 24 hours.

These instructions were provided by Apple in an update to its official support document on cleaning Pro Display XDR, so if anything goes wrong during the cleaning process, it should be covered by the Polishing Cloth’s warranty.

Why the Polishing Cloth should be treated carefully

Unlike most cleaning cloths, the Polishing Cloth is actually two layers of fabric pressed together. Harsher cleaning methods, like throwing the Cloth in a washing machine, may cause the two layers to peel apart.

That’s why a more careful cleaning process is required. But if you’re a responsible Polishing Cloth owner, you shouldn’t have to clean it very often.
