OWC Debuts US$279 Thunderbolt 3 Dock With 13 Ports

OWC today introduced its latest product, a Thunderbolt 3 USB-C Dock designed to work with the newly announced MacBook Pro. Designed for users who are concerned about the limited number of ports on the MacBook Pro, OWC’s Thunderbolt 3 Dock offers a range of different ports for connecting displays, external hard drives, and other accessories.

The OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock has a total of 13 ports and it includes full support for Thunderbolt 3 with transfer speeds of up to 40Gb/s. Two Ultra HD 4K displays are supported, or a combination of 4K, HD, and other displays using the DisplayPort port and the Thunderbolt 3 port.

There are two Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, each of which can support up to five daisychained Thunderbolt 3 devices. For connecting USB accessories, there are five USB-A 3.1 Gen 1 ports that support USB-A accessories, and two of the ports feature fast charging capabilities for charging the iPhone or iPad.

New MacBook Pro Models Lack Optical Audio Out via Headphone Jack AND ALSO No Audio Input

Apple appears to have removed optical audio output support from the headphone jack on its new 13-inch MacBook Pro with function keys, suggesting it is unlikely to have made the transition in the Touch Bar equipped models either.

Optical audio output is used to link Macs to home theatre setups and A/V systems capable of multi-channel surround sound, by way of a mini TOSlink adapter connected to the 3.5mm jack.

There is also No Audio in even with an adapter

Test out the new MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar on any Mac with this handy app

Some have been pretty skeptical concerning the new MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar, worried that it will complicate things for users who are accustomed to the physical function row of keys. If you’re in the camp of wondering exactly how the new Touch Bar will work, a new tool brings the capability to all Macs…

Shared on GitHub, a new app called Touch Bar Demo allows users to become familiar with the Touch Bar in two different ways. The first way brings the Touch Bar to your existing Mac as a standalone app. This, of course, doesn’t let you get the “Touch” experience of the capability, but it does allow you to see just how the feature works in various apps throughout macOS.

Instead of a touch interface, using this demo app on your Mac requires you to press the hardware function key and scroll through the options on-screen. The option appears overtop of the macOS interface, similar to the app switcher.

The other option is to use the Touch Bar through your iPad, as long as it’s connected via USB. As you can see in the video below, this method brings full Touch Bar functionality. The Touch Bar simply appears on the iPad and can be controlled via touch. The icons are responsive and switch instantly depending on which app is open on the Mac.

While neither of these solutions are likely practical for day-to-day use, they do allow for users to get the hang of the Touch Bar before the new MacBook Pros start shipping later this month and may hope those on the fence about it make a decision.

Apple’s $1B Irish data centre faces High Court appeal as locals march in support

The never-ending saga over Apple’s European data centre in Ireland appeared to be over when ‘final’ planning approval was granted back in August, but no: three residents have filed a new appeal that will now go all the way to the High Court.

One resident, however, wants to demonstrate that these objections represent a minority view, with most locals glad of the jobs and money the centre will bring to the area. He is organising a march in support of Apple
