Apple Marketing Lead Greg Joswiak Talks ARKit in New Interview

MacRumors reports, Apple’s vice president of product marketing Greg Joswiak this week sat down for an interview with The Australian, where he spoke about the company’s augmented reality efforts, including ARKit and the response that its gotten from developers so far.

Enthusiasm about ARKit has been “unbelievable” says Joswiak, who went on to describe some of the things developers have built so far, including virtual tape measures that can accurately measure real-world objects. “It’s absolutely incredible what people are doing in so little time,” he said. Joswiak declined to speak about Apple’s future AR plans, but said the company is going to “start at zero” with the iPhone and the iPad.

Apple was not talking about any plan to build AR glasses or a headset, but would instead promote its use on the iPhone and iPad, he said. “I think there is a gigantic runway that we have here with the iPhone and the iPad. The fact we have a billion of these devices out there is quite an opportunity for developers.

“Who knows the kind of things coming down the road, but whatever those things are, we’re going to start at zero.”

Removal of 3D Touch app switching gesture in iOS 11 confirmed as intentional change

Whilst iOS 11 includes a lot of new stuff to enjoy, there are also a few features that have been left behind.

One such example is a lesser-known 3D Touch gesture that enabled faster access to the iPhone app switcher and a quick shortcut to move back to the previous app. Both of these elements are no longer present in iOS 11 and a bug report confirms that this was an intentional removal.

The feature we are referencing, try it out for yourself: on an iOS 10 device with 3D Touch, iPhone 6s or iPhone 7, press deeply at the left edge of the screen to open the app switcher.

Instead of lifting immediately, drag across to seamlessly switch from the current app to the previous one. This was much faster than double-tapping the Home Button and dragging between open app ‘cards’, but will simply stop working when users upgrade to iOS 11.

Apple Music Turned two on June 30

In 2017, Apple Music is still recognizably the service that launched in 2015: For You and Radio are still the service’s top draws, as is the integration with your iTunes Music Library. It’s still a paid-only service, in contrary to Spotify’s ad-supported free tiers. And it’s still experimenting with new ways to differentiate the service — most recently, introducing exclusive video content.

But there have also been shifts, improvements, and missteps that have marked the service’s evolution. Apple Music is turning two: Let’s celebrate with a quick breakdown of where it is now.

    • For You is even more personalised
    • Playlist sharing, to be introduced in iOS11, will be huge ~ share playlists with the World or just you friends
    • Beats1 is less prominent but no less important
    • A lot More Video expected

How to 1

How To 2 – this weeks email

I just connected my 3 month old iPad to my Mac for the first time

It asks

Setup as New iPad

Restore from Backup – my iPhone backup

What Do I Do???

Further there is no Summary screen to choose Backup, WiFi Backup or Encrypted Backup, etc

By chance I had this same issue on the weekend, maybe for the same reason. Wanting to Backup prior to installing iOS11.

I powered down the iPad and turned back on, no change.

I Googled it, they all appeared to say.

Setup as New would wipe my data

Restore would also wipe my data

Finally, with at least my fingers crossed, I just pressed Setup as New iPad.

The iTunes screen went away and came back with the Old Faithful Summary Screen.

I checked the data on the iPad. All my mail accounts were still there with there emails and my one movie was still there.

I then ticked Use iTunes to Backup and ticked Encrypt Backup, and Backed Up.

All Good!!!

Sorry to harp on it again.

But had another customer lose their HDD data on the weekend.

Please Backup!
